Milwaukee County Zoo

Operated by the Milwaukee County Parks Commission, Milwaukee County Zoo started with 800 animals on 23 acres of land when it opened in 1892. With near-constant expansion since opening, the zoo is now home to 2,200+ animals and 348 species on 190 acres of land.

When is the zoo open?

You can visit the Milwaukee County Zoo year round! The zoo is open every day except for Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Years Day.

Zoo hours are currently 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

What can I bring to the zoo?

While the Milwaukee Zoo has a variety of options for food and beverage, guests are welcome to bring their own items in to snack on during their visit or take advantage of the zoo’s picnic areas. Carry-in alcohol is prohibited and the zoo does not allow glass bottles or containers to be brought in.

What’s new at the zoo?

If you’ve visited the Milwaukee Zoo before, it’s probably time to come back. The zoo regularly rotates special exhibits and has been working on major construction projects to build new habitats. Recent additions include immersive, world-class habitats for elephants, hippos and otters. 

How long does it take to see the zoo?

With 190 acres of land and over 2,200 animals, it’s easy to make an entire day out of a visit to the Milwaukee Zoo. If you’re not trying to see every exhibit or experience every attraction, two to three hours should give you enough time to see your favorite animals.
