While we’re trying to resist the urge to break out our flannel shirts and pumpkin decor too early, we’re celebrating the countdown to fall by sharing our favorite spots to capture one of the best parts of fall—the foliage!

Throughout this new season, you’ll find blazing reds, rustic oranges, and crisp yellows that ignite the outdoor scene in Wauwatosa. This year, peak fall foliage is expected the third week of October — that’s when the colors are in full display. 

Yes, we’re still a few days ahead of ourselves with all of the fall excitement, but it’s just the right time to plan your trip so you can fall in love with Tosa.

Menomonee River Parkway

Capture the Perfect Fall Photo: Snap a shot right along the river’s edge! The combination of vibrant colors from the leaves along the water makes up the perfect fall backdrop. 

Surround yourself with the colors of the season along the Menomonee River Parkway.  Whether you plan to get active by playing at the soccer fields or relaxing with a homemade picnic, the vibrant fall foliage over the river will be the perfect backdrop for any activity. Admire the gorgeous autumn scenery for hours by taking the multipurpose trails from Currie Park all the way to The Village, which span the entire length of Wauwatosa.

Capture the Perfect Fall Photo: Make all your Instagram followers jealous with an iconic bridge photo with colorful leaves pouring into the shot. (And don’t forget to add #DiscoverWauwatosa and tag us in your pic!)

You won’t be-leaf the beauty you will find within Hoyt Park. Its stunning bridge at the entrance has a spectacular river view that reflects the bold fall leaves and continues down the trails alongside the water. 

Sand volleyball, soccer fields, play areas, and more allow for family fun with incredible views throughout the park. Take in the crisp smell of fall with a draft beer growler or a glass of wine from The Landing Beer Garden.

Somehow we find ourselves at the County Grounds every other day

County Grounds Park

Capture the Perfect Fall Photo: Pick out the brightest tree amongst the backdrop of open fields, and snap a shot of various textures of fall foliage and colors. 

Home to various wildlife species including birds, monarchs, butterflies, owls, and more, County Grounds Park is the largest remaining open space in Milwaukee County and boasts stunningly bright autumn leaves. 

The park consists of the 3.6-mile County Grounds Park Loop that is perfect for hiking, walking, and taking nature trips, as well as admiring the confluence of the Menomonee River and Underwood Creek.

Sanctuary Woods

Capture the Perfect Fall Photo: Try to capture a photo of one of Sanctuary Woods’ wildlife species amongst its natural habitat in the fall leaves. 

Situated within County Grounds Park, you will find several acres of an old-growth forest. Sanctuary Woods is cherished for its habitat, which attracts rare wildlife species, such as long-eared owls and flying squirrels. While you admire the fall scenery, you might just catch a glimpse of one of these species amongst the fall leaves.
