Discover some Hidden Gems of Wauwatosa
Urban Ecology Center at Washington Park
Situated at the boundary between Wauwatosa and Milwaukee is Washington Park, which is renowned for its Urban Ecology Center. The Washington Park location that was established in 2007, was created to expand the Neighborhood Environmental Education Project and cater to more local schools. Located on the former Milwaukee Zoo grounds, this site was established to support neighborhood revitalization efforts.
This oasis was carefully designed by Frederick Law Olmsted, the visionary behind Central Park. Beyond its picturesque aesthetics, the park offers a wide range of engaging activities. Visitors can immerse themselves in the diverse wildlife, participate in serene water-based activities such as fishing and canoeing, and explore the charming Native Wisconsin Animal Room. Equipment rentals, including camping gear and biking, canoeing, and kayaking equipment, are also available.
The Urban Ecology Center provides environmental education, internship opportunities, wedding and facility rentals, as well as hosting birthday parties. Community programs focused on the arts and sustainable food are actively supported.
Regardless of the season, the park is a must-visit outdoor destination. It offers opportunities for snowshoeing adventures in a winter wonderland. Washington Park truly serves as a year-round sanctuary for nature enthusiasts and a venue for community gatherings.
